I have the following two questions regarding VRP in practice:

  1. What could be the max and average length of a route? We assume that each route starts and finishes at a depot. Can a route take, say more than 24hrs?
  2. What could be the min/max or average number of demand points/customers that a vehicle can visit?

Well, it depends...

  1. I 've seen cases where the vehicles run 24/7 and need to be planned 15+ days. That being said, most of the time, it's a 10 hour trip with a lunch break.
  2. For maintenance or repair visits, a visit can easily take 2 hours. For store deliveries, I've seen 45 minutes to unload. For customer home deliveries, it can be 3 minutes. Time (= distance) between visits can be anywhere between minutes (or even seconds for garbage pickup rounds) to hours.
