I must admit that I am not (at all) an expert on that particular problem. However, whenever I need to solve a problem where the term "knapsack problem" is part of it, I consult David Pisingers homepage http://www.diku.dk/~pisinger/index.html . There is often some very good papers and some efficient codes.
